I just spontaneously reffed a B-Squad volleyball match. nbd. It was kinda fun..haha I'm not passionate about reffing, though, so I hope it doesn't become a regular thing.
It's been so fun to be part of the varsity volleyball program this fall at STMA. It has given me some great examples of coaches, and I've even been trying to apply some of what I see there from the other coaches in my classroom as I teach. (Or at least keep those things in mind.)
It also gives me a chance to meet some different students that I otherwise would never come in contact with probably. I've worked mostly with the varsity, but the younger girls know who I am and I have several of them as students actually. It's great to get to know these girls in a different way than just their teacher. I think it gives us something in common that we both kind of care about and enjoy doing. They are willing to be more relaxed and themselves, as am I, and so it works out that way. (Which is another thing I'm trying to keep in mind as I teach. I'm not sure how it fits in yet, though..)
I really miss playing competitive volleyball, so it's so fun to get to be a part of that kind of intensity and that kind of team-ness again. Even just shagging balls and helping run drills, I get to be in on the action and at least do enough that my shoulders can be pretty sore at times. One of the coaches offered me her spot on a women's volleyball league in Monticello since she is prego, so I got to actually play last night. (I'm pretty rusty..ha!) But SO fun. It helps get me out of my classroom and forget about grading papers and lesson plans and a little bit just school in general. Which I need to do sometimes and don't if I don't have an excuse. (Bad, Kendra.)
I also found out today that I guess I'll be coaching a J.O. team this winter. Surprise! They just assigned me a team without asking. haha. Oh well. It will be fun :)
Maybe by then my life will be out of survival mode and into vice-survival mode..we'll see!!
